| Personality | |
| DeBura personality exists in a state of detached irony; among acquaintances she is know for her no-nonsense attitude toward everything, and with her colleagues she has developed a fatalistic brand of humor, (straight-faced teasing). She is aloof but grounded in what she labels her responsibilities, and it isn't difficult to develop a working or studious relationship with Annaliese. Personal relationships (friendships, mentor-ships), however, are much harder to bait out of her, as she has to maintain a strong hold of secrecy. Her past has made her private, mysterious, and seemingly incapable with trusting others with her tamed emotions. This makes her look dubious at times, and a bit scant on the side of stability. | History |
The DeBura family history is pocked with instances of unfortunate tragedy and premeditated betrayal. For generations they lived solely in France, acting as a predominate Pureblood family involved in politics, education and business. Once well known, they were a lesson of how easily obscurity can reach out and grip the largest and pull it under. The only son and heir of the line, Clarence de Bura was exiled from France in the early 19th century after an ill-fated attempt at treason. The only thing that had spared his life was the family's insistence that their name be allowed to continue...even if it was to be shamed by growing elsewhere. Each generation faced a child of poor deeds—which, in the early 20th century, manifested itself in Leonce DeBura, the only son amongst his parents' three children. He was the only of his siblings to be sorted into Slytherin, and eventually, the only to survive the impending war with Gellert Grindelwald. Why this was—well, he fought along side him. For him. This had not stopped him from marrying Adalee Livingsworth, however, the daughter of an obscure Pureblood family that held relations to the Prewitts. Most agreed the marriage was arranged, as Adalee was too kind of spirit to willingly place herself in the arms of such a callous man. It was after the war, when Leonce found himself charged with war crimes and exiled from Britain—spared the kiss only because the name DeBura had yet to receive an heir. His fortune was locked away, seized by the Ministry and placed in a fund for his future children, and he and his wife were forced to make their home in Bucharest, Romania. Years later, Annaliese DeBura was born. Her mother, thoroughly fearful that—while her child appeared to physically take on the characteristics of her mother—her daughter would prove to be as monstrous as her father, took it upon herself to raise her with the inherently pure values that had been given to her. Her fears proved to be somewhat correct, as Annaliese showed signs of Leonce's temperament. This drove Adalee to take her abroad on herbology excursions and on visits to meet with her family in England. Perhaps it was these trips that made Adalee DeBura feel the freedom to stray from her husband, or perhaps it was his growing involvement with political debates that mirrored those he argued during the previous war—whatever the cause—she took a muggle lover. Six years later, her actions would cause her to give birth to a second daughter, Rowella DeBura. A bastard child who looked everything like her mother, but whom Leonce mistook as his own. Leonce, in his own way, loved his daughters. However, it was clear to him that his attachment to Annaliese was much stronger than it was to Rowella. His views on magick prompted him to question whether the youngest of the girls held any ability at all. When, at five, she proved to have no early signs of it—he tested her innate abilities by casting her into the estate well. When magick did not save her, Leonce wrote Rowella off as a squib—an therefore a liability—and left her drown. The incident was written off as an unfortunate accident, and only Annaliese, who had been playing in a nearby tree, knew the details. At eleven, Annaliese was sent to Hogwarts at the behest of her mother. Believing herself very much Romanian—although able to speak her parent's native English—she dragged her feet. The only thing that stirred excitement within her was the notion of attending school with her long-time penpal and cousin, Molly. Little did she know that the annual sorting of the students would nearly put an end to their communication, for she was placed in Slytherin and Molly was already a second year in Gryffindor. It was, perhaps, Annaliese's lack of knowledge towards the rivalry and Molly's love for family that spared their friendship. She was quick to learn the ways of her housemates, however, and her devious streak flourished quite nicely. Before the end of the year, she felt as if she truly belonged—creating a niche for herself in Potions and Transfigurations and partaking in several excursions that earned her detentions. Tragedy struck again in Annaliese's fifth year. Although she was unaware of the events happening in her tension-filled home, she was informed a month before the holidays that her mother had died. In England. It would be later, after her seventh year, that she would discover her father's knowledge of her mother's affair and his subsequent decision to do away with her. Apparently he did not enjoy the knowledge that his wife had strayed, nor that if she had another child it would not be with him and that it would receive half of the inheritance that would go to Annaliese. Here's where Adalee's attention to Annaliese paid off. Ambitious to a fault, the young woman was prone to try to work things to benefit herself. However, her mother's murder was the catalyst that placed the world into perspective for the Slytherin. On the holidays and her trips home, she experience intense training from her father—as well as stilted views into the life he was immersing himself into (the life that was echoing more strongly in the shadows of England). Aware that she did not want to partake in the movement set forth by Lord Voldemort, Annaliese began to withdraw from her classmates who did, and eventually pull away from her father. With the knowledge that Leonce killed her mother, and the resurfacing of the memory that he had also killed her sister, Annaliese broke ties with him after her graduation. Wishing to create a fresh start, she traveled to France and Portugal to receive her Mastery in transfigurations. She returned to England at the age of twenty-two and began to work for the Ministry of Magic as a member of the International Relations Department. After a year she discovered her talent of research as well as the strong ability to play situations around herself, and found that she was being watched closely by the Department of Mysteries. At the age of twenty-five, she was approached by the Department head, placed into training, and given the status of Unspeakable. Her political neutrality as the war against Voldemort began to grow served her well, and no one faced any qualms about sending her off to Russia to partake in a five year research project. A project that would last until 1991. Nearly eight years longer than it should have. During this time she studied the theories produced by Russian witches and wizards in the field of necromancy. It was her first experience as a spy, as the Russians were not keen in giving information to outside sources—and her Romanian citizenship, as well as her grasp on both the Romanian and Russian languages allowed her join the projects without being hassled. Two years into the case, when she realized that returning to England would not be possible with the rising tension in both England the the Soviet Union, Annaliese moved deeper into her cover and forged working as well as personal relationships with her companions. Here she met Francis Mikhael Ivanovich and Espen Saratov, the former would become her fiancee and the latter her closest friend. Both were men assigned to the resurrection project by the surprisingly autocratic Romanian Ministry of Magick, who wished to keep a close eye on what the Soviet Union was dirtying their hands with. While the three of them never disclosed their missions to one another, the connection was felt regardless and their true purposes often hinted at with ironic, inside jokes. In 1989 Annaliese believed she had found a way into England. With the aid of Francis, she used muggle transportation to reach the Soviet border. The trip proved to be fatal for both when their vehicle met with another, but the muggle doctors were able to bring Annaliese back from the dead. An irony, as it seemed muggles were better at it than wizards. Without a fiancee and without a secure method to reach a nation corrupted by the darkest wizard of their time, she returned to her extended mission with a vengeance. She worked side-by-side with Saratov to both catalog and circumvent the progress of Russian necromancers until the 1991 overthrow of the Soviet Union gave her a second opportunity to return to England. She took it. The England she returned to was far different from the one she had left. Finding it difficult to reestablish old ties, for she could not find half of the people she had once known, she tried to reestablish herself in her old Department, only to find that her brush with death had locked her out. Unwilling to sit idly in her mother's estate, Annaliese joined the Auror training program and began to devise a method in which she could help those who opposed Voldemort. Before she knew it, she had signed her life away. She became a spy again, this time to a resistance formed to fight the very ministry she worked for. Unsure of who to trust, she only allowed Molly Weasley to know her true alliance, and set about to secure a channel of intelligence that would provide the Order with small, but helpful, information. Then, she went to work reestablishing her old friendships with the Pureblood families who were still alive, and created a name for herself in the Department of Law Enforcement as a diligent, very private and professional Auror. As each year passed, Annaliese found herself slipping into the character she would have to be. Her younger, more emotional and devious self disappeared and was replaced with a woman with schooled expressions, vague statements, and an air of mystery. Not many knew (or know) where she had been for just over a decade, and fewer knew what she had been doing. She established no romantic relationships, and even kept her friends at arms length—unwilling to let foolhardy trust be the death of her. Or them. But, it's all catching up to her. Too long she has given herself over to the cause of others, with the knowledge that she will likely continue to do so until she dies. She has forgotten what it is to be a human and not a tool for more causes than she cares to count. Her family is dead, her friends all have agendas of their own, and she's disturbed to find that she has found a satisfying acquaintance and colleague in her father's old Master, Grindelwald. In the end, she, like everyone else, can only speculate where all of this will take her—and can only hope that it is not to an early grave. | |
